Many colleges and universities that offer online graduate degree programs effectively use new technologies and a wide variety of media to allow students to pursue these degrees.
Web-based learning starts with an online campus website. These virtual learning environments allow online students to login and receive information as well as interact with fellow online students. One of the most important things that you can do if you plan to enroll in an online program is to make sure you have a good computer with high-speed Internet. Otherwise utilizing some of the media requirements for your courses will be frustrating.
Course Management Systems
Many online graduate degree institutions utilize course management systems that allow instructors and students the ability to interact with each other, to track assignments and progress and they often offer much more. The most popular course management systems are eCollege, Moodle, and Blackboard.
For the most part this software is simple to use. The student simple goes to the institutions assigned website and logs in with a user name and password. At this point the student is directed to class assignments, correspondence from teachers or other students and depending on the type of class, be directed to a “virtual” classroom.
Virtual Classrooms
Some online graduate degree courses may require students to utilize a virtual classroom. This simply means that students may be required to make use of streaming video or audio to watch or listen to a lecture. This is done directly on the computer or you may even be able to download the video or audio to your IPOD or other portable devise.
Then you can watch or listen to the information as often as you want or wherever you want. These options have proven to be such an advantage for students that many traditional onsite classes now offer lectures in the same manner.
Online graduate degree programs will inevitably have a lot of reading. You will need to be able to access Word documents and PDF files. These files can be downloaded and printed to make them easier to use. If the technology is new to you it can be a little overwhelming at first. Most online institutions have the resources to help new students get familiar and comfortable with the technology so this shouldn’t scare you off.
Still Use Textbooks
Even though this is the digital age, textbooks are still in use. Sometimes those textbooks are available as ebooks and can be housed on readers, computers or even IPODs and similar devices. But traditional textbooks are still very much a part of the learning experience.
Back It Up
Your computer is going to be a very vital part of getting your online degree. You will be working on assignments, gathering notes, and putting your academic life on the line. Make sure you take the precaution of backing up your files and information on a daily or at least weekly basis. Months or even years worth of work can be lost in the blink of an eye. Even backing up to a set of flash drives is preferable to doing nothing.
Diploma and Transcript
Online graduate degree diplomas and transcripts look the same as those earned by on-campus students. The diplomas don’t specify that you earned your degree online. Online programs are growing and gaining in both popularity and acceptance. Over sixty percent of all colleges and universities offer online studies of some type. This includes schools like Duke University, Harvard and Pennsylvania State University.
